And then there was one....

Roederer Cristal Rosé 2004 $425.00

Tasting notes: Cristal Rosé 2004 is precise, racy and balanced. A pastel pink colour with bright, slightly orange glints. Fine, light bubbles in a long-lasting flow. The bouquet is delicate and subtle, with elegant fruitiness (red fruits: strawberry, fig), zesty hints (citrus fruit: lemon and orange) and juicier nuances such as vine peach. There is a deep, slightly sweet burst of aromas.
Varietals:  60% Pinot noir - 40% Chardonnay
Region: Champagne, France

Friday's Answer:

In this case "Fridays answer" just won't do...

With a great deal of pride and weary typing fingers we have to take some time to wrap up what has been a wonderful experience.

In order to properly close this promotion we must first go back to the beginning...

Back in April I was looking at some instagram pictures that Renzo was taking with his iphone around the store and an idea popped into my head, at first it seemed simple enough...

Lets show off the fact that we have a HUGE rosé selection in the summertime.

"We'll take a bunch of pictures around the store, at the cheese shop, the deli and the pasta shop in our corner and showcase a new one each day." Renzo seemed to like the idea and started setting things up. I handed him a bunch of bottles and asked him to be creative with it.

His first set was taken at Tutto Pasta.
(Below are some of the ones that we didn't use and clicking any picture will show it to you fullsize).

The next day he went over to Fairfield Cheese Company and took some more and he was getting us set to kick off the new promotion. Renzo is very creative and things were going along quite well...
(Here are the rest of those pictures that were never used either)

"Ok Renzo", I said, "Now for a handful here at Harry's. Try some fun things and lets try to use some of our history in a few along the way to show that there is alot here that we've been around for a long time. One of the things I would really like to show the endurring legacy of our store".
He looked around and started trying a few things...
(These are the pictures leftover from that set)

It was time to pack up and go home for the night and thats when, unbeknownst to me, things began to evolve...

I have come to enjoy the ride home along the Post road sometimes.

I pass Rawley's and Hemlock Hardware pressed right up along the road and further down is our ageless shopping area the feels to me like a small town used to feel, a bit like "It's A Wonderful Life" with lots of small businesses and people strolling along the sidewalks, moms and dads with their kids, a candy shop and Mark Twain sitting right there on the bench. There is even a Gazebo and an old time Community Theatre on the corner (Something positive really needs to be done with our theatre... Soon).

Something began to resonate.

Jan and I went to dinner at Bodega that night and everything changed...

We were sitting at our table and through the window I could see a sign above a very unassuming looking building that said "Serving Fairfield for 75 years". It was the Ronald J Henry insurance building and it was the changing moment for this promotion. "Hmm" I thought, "They've been there 3 years longer than us".

I began to talk with Jan about all of the small businesses that our town supports, the idea that we still have family owned Hardware stores and Bakeries, we also still have family owned Drug stores and Grocery stores! The more we talked, the more we began to realize how well this town supports its small businesses and that there wasn't just one of each of these type of shops, we have multiples, and they're in many catagories.

More surprising, Some of them have been here even longer than we have!

"We need to make sure that the people in this town realize how lucky we are. So many towns have empty building after empty building left from what use to be good, thriving businesse before big box stores ran everyone out." I said. "There is a distinct differnce between the Coconut cake at The Pantry and the one at Stop & Shop and the same goes for the service your receive at our store as compared to one of the giant stores".

The next day was a little bittersweet for Renzo. He was going to be able to use this talent, one that no one really knew about but everything he had done to get started was going to get scrapped. Fortunately for us, he was excited about the new path and he was willing to do the creative work if I would reach out to local businesses and ask them if they wanted to be involved... Fair enough.

I started dialing the phone and explaining the premise. What was interesting to me is that so many people understood very easily that it made sense. This was something that struck a cord with people on a community level and the excitement rubbed off very easily. Soon people were coming up with ideas and moving things around in the individual stores to "set up the shot". Renzo was treated to a Hot dog or Sandwich a few times along the way and there were so many "Thank yous" that we lost count. My phone even started ringing with other people that wanted to be involved.

In the following weeks and months we visited many small businesses and the promotion evolved as we thought about this towns history and landmarks. There was a real connective adjustment as the weeks went by and each of us learned more about the town, its history, churches, services, traditions etc...

I noticed quickly that people were really getting involved and were very excited about what we were doing so I tried very hard to approach it with open ears and eyes. Early on I noticed one person in particular that was involved each day and who was not just guessing, but seemed to really get it. So... of course, I used it as an opportunity to beat up on and with no provocation whatsoever, make him the target of a written beating in each days post. Mark (Mr. Fairfield) Beyerly came by each and everyday of this promotion and diligently lead the way to its conclusion adding fun clues and educational notes to our promotion and in return for his insight and hard work he was jabbed at daily by yours truly.

I am quite happy to admit that without him (and his clan), my journey here would have been much less fulfilling, so, I offer my humble apologies and sincere thanks. Mark, you were great!

(In todays picture above Mark finally gets his due when on Saturday we invited him to come down to the store and be crowned the King of "Rose of the day"!
In the picture he dons his well earned crown and holds a 3 litre scepter of rosé. He was then joined by his much better half (had to get one more in) Sandy in our final picture titled "Ring around the rosés" which includes our Harry's staff to help wrap things up at a store not featured until the final day. Our own Harry's Wine & Liquor!)

Mark was not alone in our game, he was the first to be involved everyday but he was not the only one. Chefmichaelatyourservice became a daily contributor fairly early on and there were many people that checked in regularly. Some people commented once or twice a week and others started strong and then faded a bit only to reappear further down the line. Lots of people "liked" our posts on Facebook and many of them "shared" our posts. I am sorry to say that in fairness to everyone I can't begin to name all of our participants that popped in and out along the way.

The number of people that have stopped me in the store to share a story or tell me that they were following silently was sometimes a bit overwhelming. I had this sense of responsibility for continuing what was only meant to be a self promoting campaign that morphed in to so much more. I am glad that Renzo's pictures spoke so well to so many. He and I are both really pleased that this run connected with so many people along the way.

This past couple of weeks were filled with the question, "Whats next?"

It is a good and fair question. We have said time and again over the past months that we have a great town and this promotion could never show "all" of what this town has to offer. In the upcoming year our town of Fairfield is celebrating 375 years! That deserves some major fanfare and if we can be the catalyst to some creative and fun toasts to our town we will be very pleased.

The question is... Whats next?

I'll answer this way... WE have some fun things in store for the celebration and we invite all of you to join us and to find your own ways to speak about the virtues of Fairfield Ct.

A final thought...

This, in our minds is what rosé feels like:

It's uplifting, It's connectable, simple and elegant at the same time, It is everything you need and want.

Now, stop and take a minute... you will realize that you can use the very same descriptors when you describe our town of Fairfield, it really is a model town. Fairfield... It's Rosé personified!

(some final pictures that didn't make the original cut)

If you've scrolled down this far there is one final message. On the first day that I sent Renzo out in to the town to start taking pictures, for some unexplained reason, this note was tucked under the windshield wiper of our delivery truck that Renzo used time and again to take pictures. He simply propped up the bottle next to the note and clicked this very innocent picture that speaks very loudly.

I never knew quite what it meant or how it could be used in our game but it does feel like a fitting final message to the folks that scrolled all the way down and finished with us.

- Cheers

Wine Tasting - Saturday 1-4PM, Aug 31

Your Host will be Len Gulino "The Wine Tutor."
We're looking forward to our next semester of classes in our very popular "Harry's Wine School" with Len leading us through another fun series of subjects that will take us right up to the holidays. If you have never done a class with us, you don't know what you are missing. The list will be released shortly after Labor Day so keep your eyes open and act quickly if you'd like to be involved because the classes sell out quickly!

Rossinyol Xarel-Lo 2012                                              $8.99
Fresh aromas of peach and melon abound on the nose. These are accented by notes of orange feel in the mouth where this wine shows that it is well-balanced with great acidity and minerality.

Bearboat Pinot Noir Russian River Valley 2009         $14.99
Clear pale ruby color with pronounced strawberry, and bing cherry aromas. Delicate body, well balanced acidity and lingering finish of strawberries and hint of vanilla spice.  Winemaker’s Notes

L'Opale de Saint-Tropez Rosé 2012       $12.99
Offers a deft balance of luscious minerality, vibrant red fruit flavors and rich, spicy notes. Ripe melon and candied citrus fill the finish, accompanied by hints of cream and salted almond.  Wine Spectator, 90 pts

Biondi Santi Braccale Red Toscana 2010                    $14.99
80% Sangiovese Grosso and 20% Merlot. Aged for 10 months in French oak barrels. This wine displays a subtle balance between the earthy/spicy notes of traditional Sangiovese (BBS11 -  original Brunello clone) and the rich, fruity roundness of Merlot.  Perfectly adapted to the climactic growing conditions of the Maremma region of southwestern Tuscany.  Importer’s Notes

Beer Tasting 4 - 7pm Friday, Aug 30

Your host will be Johnathon from Oskar Blues Brewery.

Dale's Pale Ale      $10.49/6pc
America’s first hand-canned craft beer is a voluminously hopped mutha that delivers a hoppy nose, assertive-but-balanced flavors of pale malts and hops from start to finish. First canned in 2002, Dale’s Pale Ale is a hearty (6.5% and 65 IBUs), critically acclaimed trailblazer that has changed the way craft beer fiends perceive canned beer.

Mama’s Little Yella Pills $10.49/6pc
An uncompromising, small-batch version of the beer that made Pilsen, Czech Republic famous. Unlike mass market “pilsners” diluted with corn & rice, Mama’s is built with 100% pale malt, German specialty malts, and Saaz hops. While it’s rich with Czeched-out flavor, its gentle hopping (35 IBUs) and low ABV (just 5.3%) make it a luxurious but low-dose (by Oskar Blues standards) refresher.

Gubna $15.99/4pc
Was inbred from Oskar Blues Brewery’s hankering to confront 100+ IBU’s with a single hop to emphasize that complexity of character can arise from simple elements. This time around, GUBNA (10% ABV, 100+ IBUs) cranks up the complexity of hops by piling Cascade hops on top of copious amounts of Summit hops, balanced by the backbone of German Dark Munich Malt and Rye Malt. North American 2-row barley combines with the other grains to lay the foundation for the hop onslaught to come. Post-fermentation dry-hopping allows this monstrosity to gently coax the citrus rind and grapefruit aroma while providing a rye malt-induced, spicy-yet-round middle, and a brisk, clean bitter finish.

Deviant Dale’s IPA  $10.99/4pc
(8% ABV, 85 IBUs) was born at the crossroads, in a juke joint, as if Dale’s Pale Ale sold its soul to balance Deviant’s foreboding aromas of citrus, grapefruit rind and piney resins with a copper ball-of-fire color and inscrutable finish. The 2011 GABF Silver Medal Winner (American IPA Category) is the Devil incarnate with untold amounts of malt and hedonistic Columbus dry-hopping.

Rosé of the day - Friday August 30, 2013

Chateau Peyrasol Rosé 2012 3ltr $179.99
Tasting notes: It carries a pale rose color, a lovely fruit blossom nose and finishes crisply dry with a stony touch that gives it class and elegance
Varietals: Cinsault, Grenache and Syrah
Region: Cotes de Provence, France

Thursday's Answer:Let see if I can head some of you off at the pass... No this is not the Stratfield section and yes it does deserve recognition as does our Tunxis hill section, the University area and so on. I saw these Fire Hydrant guys this week and thought about the idea that our town is going to turn 375 years old in just a few months and it got me thinking about our history. That is the basis for one of our final two Rose of the day posts. We have more to say on Monday as we wrap up what we think has been lots of fun and hopefully it has helped all of us look at how lucky we are to live here and be part of this great community.

I have been saying for weeks that it was going to be impossible to get all of this town in during our promotion this spring and summer, the good news is that we will be celebrating the 375 years with everyone and we think that we'll be able to show more what this town is all about while we do that.

Ok, Yesterday...

Our quickest player on Thursday was Lynne D'Eramo whom we miss since she moved to North Carolina but we are glad that she remembers us and her town. Maybe we'll tempt her back at some point. Her gues was "Greenfield Hill Center" and of course she was right. Thanks Lynne, hope to see you soon

Next, Susan L. Melcher who has also been a regular contributor throughout the game posted "Yep. Greenfield Hill center." She, of course, was also right. Thanks Susan!

Kevin (late to the party) Beyerly made it by and has also become a very regular player for the latter part of the summer while he has followed in his big brothers foot steps. His contribution yesterday was "Wow, people were right on top of this today. Greenfield Hill. The rockman is awesome sporting this Rose!" I agree Kevin, the rock man is pretty cool!
He also reminded us that we are nearing the end with "Two(again) and counting."

Chefmichaelatyourservice was a little more specific saying "Bronson Road... Starting with the nurseries & ending with greenfield hill shopping center." Right on target chef! The good chef has also made it his business to be a big part of the game and has been by on most days to add to the mix. Even looking into the future a time or two. Thanks chef!

Thursday wrapped up with The man I called the one to watch very early on. He is our most consistant player and has taken the most abuse along the way. Mark (The King) Beyerly has used his wit and smarts to play this game and help to keep it interesting and fun. Yesterday he concurred with the others posting "Greenfield Hill indeed." He then gave a little back to me by writing  "And in the lower right corner it looks like Patrick has been working out. Must be all those cases of rosé..." I'm not sure if he is calling me a rock head or giving me a nice compliment but I would say that he is probably looking at it both ways. Cheers Mark!

Ok lets see what our final Friday brings!

Wednesday's Answer:
Driving into work this morning showed a busy town as the kids are back in school and the early morning traffic ramps back up. It's nice to see all of the hussle and bussle of students getting back to see their classmates and new teachers, it has a great energy to it.
One nice thing about the summer (aside from Rosé season) is that moving around town in the morning is a bit easier since there are no busses or parents dropping kids at school. But, The summer vacations have ended and that signals a turn in season here in the notheast and soon we will wrap up the peak of rosé season for another year. There will still be some on the rack year round but our selection of 125+ has dwindled to 70 or so and by the end of the weekend there will be a few less.

It has been a great year for the wondeful summer quaffs and I think it is safe to say that summer 2013 is the year that Rosé went mainstream. They have been building radiply for the past decade but the jump in popularity was most evident this year. History will likely show that this season had the single biggest jump in sales.

Ok, lets not drag on...

Yesterdays answers were started by Jackie (....) Beyerly and her answer was "Black Rock Turnpike....now I am hungry after seeing Mac Daddy's and Country Cow." Good answer Jackie, we'll take it.

Kevin (Hubby) Beyerly said "I agree with the wife! And then there were two.." Well, actually there are two after today. Friday will end the week but our final post for the promotion coincides with Labor Day on Monday. BTW, It is a good idea to agree with the wife. Well done

Susan L. Melcher chimed in next and cooberated the previous guesses when she put up "Black Rock Turnpike. My office is across the street in White Birch Plaza." Thanks Susan!

Mark (Gotcha again) Beyerly was up next and caught us again... "BRT - primarily, but isn't Fairfield Woods LIbrary on Fairfield Woods Road?" and of course the answer is yes. In our defense, we are showcasing areas or sections of fairfield so techinically..., lets just go with "in the area of" and say close enough. He finished his answer with "Oh - and I like the Triennes - have enjoyed a couple of those this summer....." Me too Mark!

The final post was put up by Chefmichaelatyourservice who posted "Lower Black Rock Tkpe." We'll so correct! Thanks Chef

I love the rock man that Renzo added to this collage, does anyone know its story?

Triennes Rosé 2012 1.5ltr

Region: Provence, France

Monday's Answer:
Apparently I made a mistake yesterday and titled our post on Facebook "Monday August 26, 2013" which caused some confusion for a good number of people. My mistake, I'll be more careful today.
It looks like Renzo has calmed him shaking hand a bit and is trying not to do too much with his final clues which is making today easier to see and follow. He went out and shot 2 of his final 4 yesterday and though he got a bunch in to each of the videos that he took (they move fast so don't blink), when he got back he reiterated how much there still is out there.
Doing this makes you stop and smell the rosés a bit (pun intended), meaning... all of the things that we typically drive by without much notice or say to ourselves "I should stop in there to see what it is", have much more closely looked at us this past spring and summer. It's been a great run and it isn't over yet.
In the past two days we have looked at a couple "sections" of Fairfield. The first was "Post road" aka "Downtown" and the second was "Southport". Today we look at a third and then tomorrow and Friday, a couple more.

Ok, back to yesterday's answer...
Kevin (Count down) Beyerly was or first player yesterday and posted "Three animated windows, very nice! Southport Historic District would be my guess." and you would be right Kevin! He followed up with a sentiment that many of us share when he said "T Minus 3 Rose and counting. I am bummed!" You and me both Kevin.

Second was Mark (I'm a little green around the gils) Beyerly who noticed all of the motion in yesterdays post and said it like this "The bobbing Rose is making me a little seasick. Maybe a tripod Renzo?" Couldn't agree more Mark, he is trying hard to squeeze as much in as possible and then he had the idea of taking a "still" with the water in the background still moving. Good idea but the execution was tough especially with animation in the other two windows. I felt a bit like I was on a boat. Mark completed his answer by posting "Looks like Southport though" and as usual he was right on target.

Next was Jamie Cooper who took it to the next level by posting "Clockwise: Trinity Church in Southport; Yves Cuilleron at Southport Beach; downtown Southport" Wow! that is pretty impressive Jamie! I hope you didn't get vertigo trying to decipher all of the moving pics. That is pretty good, thanks.

Finally, The good chef, Chefmichaelatyourservice put in his answer for the day and wrote "Pequot Ave., Southport." and was also right. Thanks everyone!

Ok, Lets finish it up strong!
Lots of energy today as we plow through "hump day" (gotta love that commercial) and get ready for the holiday weekend.

- Cheers

Varietals: Syrah

Region: Northern Rhone, France

Monday's Answer:
There are a good number of answers that will have worked for yesterday and Maureen Hart-Lenker gave us our first when she posted hers... "Post rd in Fairfield!". Correct!

Kevin (Special delivery) Beyerly was next and posted "Built as a system of mail delivery routes, that would be Post Road". Somehow his answer whas "hidden" and I did not see it at first but once I noticed that there was a hidden answer, we made it public. I hope it is ok, it was a good answer.

Chefmichaelatyourservice really went for it and gave us a bunch of the places seen in the videos "Middle Post Road: Bus Stop by Sherman Green, Fairfield Clothiers, Park Bench in front of Community Theater." Very detailed chef, I think you got most if not all of the different pieces in there. Tanks

Jackie (Dot) Beyerly was up next and said "I will jump on board with everyone else....Post Road" Good idea Jackie, that makes your right just like the other players. Thanks for playing along.

Peggy O'Leary aka "Mom" gave us a shout out all the way from Ireland and said "getting fancy there..." which we are I guess. Trying to get a lot into the short amount of time left for this promo. Hope you visit is going well.

Mark (Captain obvious) Beyerly made his way by a bit later in the day and was able to figure it out, well at least the idea that things were moving when he posted "Whoa. Animation?" I guess with your history we can call that a right answer. The pictures were moving and that is animation so...
FYI though Mark, we are looking for the section of Fairfield not the format of the clue.:)

Section or area number two is up for today. Renzo is still working on getting his new style together, there is a lot going on in a short period of time. He says he will have it perfected by the end of the week. We'll see. There were a record number of people that saw yesterdays clue which was fun from our end. Lets see how today goes.

Monday, August 26, 2013

Region: Bandol, Provence, France

Please Read:
As we embark on our final week of Rosé of the day we are a bit melancholy about it.  Renzo has been sent out on many "missions" and although we will have posted more than 100 places since April 15th, we just have not had enough time to fully celebrate our fine town and all that it has to offer. There are still many unexplored small businesses that have contacted us in hopes of being our subject of the day. There are still a number of Rosés that have been left untouted and yet here we are... wrapping up summer 2013 with the precursor week to Labor Day. We thought that rather than spend the week on restaurants or other public service organization, landmark homes, the remaing jewerly shops, barbers/hairdressers, thrift shops, delis, clothiers or Dr.s, Dentists, etc...

Do you see our problem here? Fairfield has so much to offer!

We are going to do a more general celebration. We are all Fairfielders! Each of us wears the badge with great pride and with good reason. Within our borders we often break down were we live, there are a number of "sections" of Fairfield and each has something to offer so why not do a broader scope look in our final week. This week we will not be looking for the name of a business, Landmark or which church we are highlighting. This week will be dedicated to the area we are visiting for the day.

Today is our first general area and the picture contains a few of the small businesses that we weren't able to capture individually. These are businesses that are unique to our town and this particular section of it. Can you tell us where we are?

Friday's Answer:

Lynne D'Eramo was the first to act Friday and was also the first correct answer with "Sacred Heart University". Well done Lynne!

Like Mark (Bambi phobia) Beyerly and his "Fear the Deer" answer Domenico J Iorfino went to the Mascot and posted "Go Pioneers!"... We'll take it. Thanks Domenico.

Kevin (My big brother isn't afraid of deer, spiders yes, but not deer) Beyerly was next in line with a nice compliment to Renzo when he posted "Great picture! It is Sacred Heart, I wonder what the object is the photo is taken against. Maybe a shiny campus vehicle or one of their shiny red rubbish receptacles that contain the logo as well? Please do tell." You Beyerly's are good, In fact it is one of the campus vehicles, a shuttle bus to be exact.

Jackie (The Scholar) Beyerly was on board with the previous posters and said "Agreed Sacred Heart. This week seemed like an educational theme with schools and libraries.....just saying" Well, part of the week anyway. Remember, we started out on Penfield reef with the lighthouse so we weren't all books and colleges.

It took a bit of time before we heard from him but Mark (Wet mop) Beyerly did come by later in the day to put the brakes on our fun when he "correctly" pointed out a flaw. He said "Let's clarify - this is the Sacred Heart logo - but WHERE this actually was taken is unknown and cannot be deciphered from the photo (Renzo, you are slipping...). And, since part of the Sacred Heart campus is in Bridgeport and some in Fairfield, it may not even be taken in our town! It could even be the Stamford campus....Just sayin... But - nice bottle." Erm... Well we are glad that you approve of the bottle... and you are, well, "right" I suppose. We could have tried to pull the wool over everyones eyes and we could have driven down to Stamford to take the picture but I'll just let our track record speak for itself.

Chefmichaelatyourservice was our final player on Friday and was straight to it with "Sacred Heart University" and of course was right. Thank you chef.

Wednesday's answer:
It wasn't so long ago that the Pequot Library was slated for closure. The town budget was submitted and there would be no money available. Typical of our great town of Fairfield, there was a grassroots effort to "Save the Library" and it worked! Once again the residents of this town went to protect something that they cared about. Just like the many small businesses that offer so much diversity to our town are frequented by all of you.

Lets see how the game went yesterday:
Jackie (I'm seeing dots) Beyerly was again our first player and came up with our answer once again. She posted "Pequot Library in Southport....there's those dots again!" yea, those dots, they say it is the first sign of madness :)

Mark (The Shepherd) Beyerly was by pretty quickly to get thing back in order and attempt to refocus things for our final run as we come down the stretch with our "Rosé of the day".  His post was a stern and focused message "Not sure what the heck people were talking about yesterday. Snap put of it people! Today is an easy one - Pequot Library in Southport. Not a pizzeria, not a firehouse......." That is right Mark! You tell 'em.

Chefmichaelatyourservice was in next and came up with the right answer "Pequot Library" was the answer from the good chef. Nicely done! Our good chef is making a bit of a habit out of seeing into the future. A couple of days ago he made mention of todays clue. Interesting.

Kevin (I don't have to listen to you) Beyerly came by and picked up on the Beyerly family dots as he posted " ...Wow, Mark is a little feisty today. Pequot Library indeed." Don't give your brother any lip Mister! Your answer was correct.

And of course Jackie (hey thats my husband) Beyerly came it to stand up for her guy "Maybe Mark needs some Rose to mellow out"  oh, I think he's doing just fine.

Susan L. Melcher was our next player and posted her answer "Yep......Pequot Library." Nicely done Susan, Thank you.

Finally we had our first answer from Michael Knipp as he guessed  "William Miller's house?" Sorry Michael, not this time. I can see how the mistake could be made. It does look alot like his place. :)
