Rosé of the day - Friday June 28, 2013

Tasting notes:  This is clean and crisp, with bright red fruit like wild strawberries. On the palate it makes quite the impression as a easy drinking, dry rosé: snappy, fair, polished, and bright, this is an engaging to the last drop.
Varietals: Garnacha

Region: Campo de Borja, Aragón, Spain

Thursday's answer: i don't know about everyone else but I just loved this picture. It is of course the sculpture of Mark Twain that sits on the sidewalk in front of Sweet Rexies Candy. Renzo did a great job of picking up the natural levity there is in Twains persona. He was not the only one...

Mark (Not Twain) Beyerly put up a famous quote by the writer regarding his love for Champagne (appropriate in that this is a promotion for Harry's)  "Too much of anything is bad, but too much champagne is just right" Nicely done Mr Beyerly, nicely done... drat!

Next was Joe Worthington who was yesterdays spot on answer when he said "On Post road outside Sweet Rexies". That is exactly right and Joe has done this a few times now, Keep it up!

Then we had Alexander Dacey who captured this one very well with just one word "Candy!" and it brought a smile to my face. Alexander is becoming a player. Nice job from you too sir.

Cindy Carley Barker also captured the feel of this one very well when she posted "Ah, Mr. Twain isn't much of a conversationalist anymore but he loves to sit with me while I munch on my Swedish fish outside Rexies on th Post Road!" This was another one that brought a smile to my face and I guess if you have Mark twain and some candy, life is pretty good! Thank you for being part of it Cindy. That is two days in a row, you may be finding your stride too.

Chefmichaelatyourservice showed up last because he was working at our previous days location (The Museum). His answer was a question that I don't know the answer to. here is his comment "... but if Mr. Twain was sitting where he is now many years ago, wouldn't he be sitting in front of Larry's Diner ???" Good question Chef, anyone know the answer?

This promotion has turned in to a great exchange and maybe some of that is simply the Twain influence yesterday with all of the witty comments but it seems that there is a lot of smart commenting. Thanks to all that have gotten involved!

Rosé of the day - Thursday June 27, 2013

Domaine Sainte-Eugenie Corbieres Rosé 2012 $10.99

Tasting notes: Bright, attractive raspberry pink color. Very fresh, expressive red fruit fragrance of strawberry, raspberry and red currant with floral overtones. Delightful tangy acidity. Smooth texture. Excellent length and balance. Truly an amazing rosé. -From the Winemaker

Varietals: Cinsault, Grenache, Mourvedre

Region: Corbières, Languedoc-Roussillon, France

Menu: Trout baked with fresh herbs, breaded veal with parsley and lemon, shellfish stew.

Wednesday's answer: Yesterday we put up tough one or at least I thought it was. A few of you seemed to be able to work throught it.
First, Mark (I know Fairfield like the back of my hand) Beyerly put up his mocking, clue laden answer which included all of the pieces to the answer without actually putting up the answer. If this were an episode of Batman, he would be The Riddler.
There also seemed to be some judgement about our use of the museum rather than a small business. I will remind you Mr. Smarty pants, that we are also using landmarks, public service, religious institutions and other Fairfield related spots along the way. If you see something in every or most towns, i.e. Stop & Shop, CVS, Kohls, etc... We won't use them since they don't really define us as a town, they are big box strores that aren't really as much a part of our community as they are a national convenience and as much as we use them, this is about our roots.
As I am writing my very witty and well thought out response to him, Mark (A day late) Beyerly puts up his official answer and now it is defined. "Yes my guess - although not 100% - is the Fairfield Museum and History Center, 370 Beach Road". Bah! foiled again!

On we go... Rachel Marie guessed - Cinzanos? It is a good guess but not this time Rachel, lets see if you get todays. Thanks for jumping in!

Chefmichaelatyourservice got in with a more defined answer on this one "I think that's a map of Fairfield with Long Island Sound on the bottom. Wild guess..... Fairfield History Museum on Beach Rd." Nicely done chef.

Janice Balint Monteleone "shared" the post and had a friend, Cindy Carley Barker, guess on her wall. She put up... "Fairfield Museum". Good job Cindy, and thanks to Jan for pointing it out.

So, what I thought was going to be next to impossible was answered by a good number of people. There were also a handful that "liked" the post.

Today we have a fun one. It is much more a landmark?, I think that is a fair way to describe it (Mark might disagree), Lets see how many responses we can get for this one!

Rosé of the day - Wednesday June 26, 2013

l'escargot Rosé 2012 $12.99

Tasting notes:Copper tinged pink color. Beautiful nose jumps out of the glass with vibrant fresh, warm wild berries. Mineral driven entry of vibrant berry flavors with an earthy tinge & lovely stone backbone enhanced by cranberry & strawberry fruit essence. Lovely summer sipper.

Varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon (75%) and Merlot (25%)

Region: Côtes de Gascogne, France

Tuesday's answer: Chefmichaelatyourservice may have been the first to answer yesterday with "Billy's Bakery on Black Rock Tkpe. ??" but he was not the last. Don't be so unsure of yourself Chef, you've come up with the answers to quite a few at this point. Get rid of the questions marks and make the statement!

Kristine George Andres came in and confirmed the chefs suspicion with her emphatic "Yes, Billy's!" Good job Kristine! If memory serves, Kristine has helped us with an answer or two along the way.

And then Finally about 8 or 10 long hours later, after the missing persons report was filed and with the Blood hounds all hooked up and ready to go, Mark (I'm late to the party) Beyerly slooooowly rolls in and puts up his answer. Thanks for the effort MARK. You know we worry about you! A phone call would be nice.

Sad to say it seems Mark never watched Bugs Bunny so the Yosemite Sam's "Lily livered" escaped him. (I'll handle the jokes around here Mark). He did do his best to get us to the precise location on Blackrock Tnpk so we'll forgive the tardiness this time but you had better get your head in the game mister!

Lots of newer people liking our pictures lately which is nice to see. Don't be afraid to put up your answers. Right or wrong we love to see participation.

Lets see how things go today. Good luck everyone...

Where was this picture taken?

Bisson Ciliegiolo Rose 2012 $20.99

Tasting notes: It is vinified dry, tastes of red cherry and wild berries and its brilliant cherry color is a particular joy to behold. Approximately 400 cases are imported for the US market annually. " -Importer

Varietals: Ciliegiolo

Region: Liguria, Italy

Monday's answer:Tom Bauder gets on the board with a correct answer and does it in convincing fashion with his quick response, "posters hardware!". Good Job Tom!

Chefmichaelatyourservice Played it safe and put up two answers, "hemlock or poster's on the post rd." One of which was correct. Lets go Chef

Joe Worthington Was in next with a more specific answer than either of the others when he posted  "Back of Posters on Black Rock Turnpike". Well played Joe! Careful Mark, this guy is gonna take your job.

Finally we had Susan L. Melcher chime in with her agreement that Joe nailed it by saying "Joe"s right...............Posters on Blk Rock Tpk"

This only leaves one question- Where is Mark (Fading) Beyerly? Friday his answer consisted of "TBC on NB" (not exactly his usual precise answer), yesterday a "like", really a like? is that all you have M( )B? Today I am laying the gaunlet down to you my nemisis!
Where are we today you no good, lily livered "in towner"? Bwaa, Haaa, Haaa
This one won't be easy!

Oh, and thanks to all of the others that have "liked" these daily pics and continue to play along.

Sorry for the late post today...

Rosé of the day - Monday June 24, 2013

Marani Saperavi Rose, 2012 $9.99

Tasting notes: Aromas of pomegranate and barberry are combined with peach and raspberry. The taste is crisp and elegant, with the bunch of flavors repeating the nose. The mid palate is silky and round ending with lively rose petal and well balanced aftertaste.

Varietals: Saperavi

Region: Kakheti, Georgia

Friday's answer: Friday was shared a number of times and there were plenty of answers and even a few that said they went to the spot looking for the bottle including one of our followers that works there. The answer of course was Trinity Baptist Church and the first correct answer was put up by Mark (The Running Man) Beyerly. I'm not sure if Mark was trying to be cute or trying to get his answer up quickest when he wrote "TBC on NB", but the idea was right. Chefmichaelatyourservice was next with "The Church off of Exit 22 of I-95 ??" which is again correct even though he didn't come with the technically correct name. We were rounded out on Friday with Jamie Cooper who guessed "That wierd church in Rowayton?". I'm not sure what thet weird church is but I'm sorry to say that the anwer was incorrect. We will only be using locations in the town of Fairfield so Rowayton won't be on the list.
Ok... Good Monday morning to all! Lets see what you've got this week!

Thursday's answer:
Everyone paid attention to yesterday's post it seems and for good reason...
These guys do it right! Carmine and the boys/girls put out a very good, consistant product that keeps their customers coming back time after time. The service is good and so is the food.
Let's recap yesterday:
Lauren Marie was the first to chime in and made it very easy "A&S", Correct!

Next up was Susan L. Melcher who did the same and was also right on target.

Chefmichaelatyourservice was supposed to get this one right and he did not let us down, he even gave them a shout out with "A and S Deli on Black Rock Tkpe.... Hi Carmine & Marcella !!!".

This games front runner, Mark (Yum, Yum) Beyerly, who is apparently mapping our progress in his head joined in. He points out that there were a couple of other sites used right near their site earlier in the game. He did not mention their other neighbor which we used the day before, "The Angus". Are you slipping or was it just too obvious? Hmmm...

Donna Pace chimed in next, I'm not sure she has grasped the concept of the game or maybe it is just that she is the sales rep and saw an opportunity to promote her product so she took it. We'll get her up to speed next time she is in.

Finally, Charles E. Lawrence III got in the game (1st time I think) with "A&S Pork Store" and if you've looked in to that meat counter with all those great sausages and fresh cut meats you can understand the urge to call it the Pork Store but it really is so much more!

Thanks for getting involved everyone. This thing is really getting fun.

Renzo does it again today as he uses the label to accent the architecture from the building. He really does have a very good eye. I think that the most amazing thing is that all of these pictures have been taken with his phone!

Enjoy your weekend everyone and we'll get back to it Monday.

Somm, The documentary

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=O4zeyuk8hL8

After reading the reviews and watching that two and a half minute trailer I am really looking forward to seeing this film about four young men working toward their Master Sommelier certification. While that might not be everyones idea of a great movie to go see with their wife, it is mine. Here at Harry's we learn, we teach and are immeressed in the world of wine. I have had opportunities to taste some of the worlds great wines and have been exposed to wine makers and industry professionals, great lovers and collectors of wine that have helped to broadened my horizons beyond my greatest expectations. I started as a chef who liked wine, but in the last decade plus since I was bitten by the bug my life has turned as have the others on our staff. This one little fruit with it's thousands of varieties, regions, vintages, and personalities.

From cat pee to wet paint, loamy soil to roses and dried leaves, Pink Grapefruit, Road tar and on... Putting words to smells, flavors, textures and density. So many different things to consider in my own mind and now I am trying to convey it to hundreds of personalities that walk through our door. How can I help you to understand through words a sensation or flavor that will help you to decide whether or not this is right for you? That is my job and there is a balance to it and it is not easy to learn.

The men in the movie are egomaniacs obsessed with a fruit. That may be oversimplifying it but when we are training our staff it is very important to remember. This staff is not only obsessed with this fruit, We are also very much driven to help others to break down the wall of the haves and the have nots in the wine world. The exclusivity of wine is perhaps its biggest draw and also its biggest flaw. Why is it ok to like or not like the things we eat like Lamb or seafood but seemingly not ok to have your own opinion about a glass of wine? Why is a persons opinion about a particular wine so black and white? It is sort of silly when we think about it and has been a regular conversation on the floor here through the years. You are drinking the wine, you know what you like or don't like and no one should be ashamed of what makes them happy when they pull the cork.
We are the conduit to expanding that experience and to trying new things, using our experience to help you to get the most out of your experiences with wine. Talk to our staff and build a relationship that enables us to make your experience better. Simple right? Nope, wine is just not that easy. However, one fact remains and that is that what it important to you should be. What is important to someone else is exactly that, important to them.

Now, off to be a wine geek and find out where this movie is playing!

Rosé of the day - Thursday June 21, 2013

Parusso "Paruss"Langhe Nebbiolo Rosato 2012 $15.99

Tasting notes: Big aromas of watermelon and light red berries along with floral and mineral notes. The flavors are just as big with the berries in the lead, notes of honey and a slight peppery quality. The bright, balancing acidity makes this a great food wine.

Varietals: Nebbiolo

Region: Piedmont, Italy

Wednesday's answer:
Wow, Lots of guessing yesterday! Lets break it down...
Chefmichaelatyourservice was first and had obviously put some thought in and as he was answering, he settled on one of two possibilities, "Horseshoe or Bill's Crossroads". Fine guesses but both were wrong sad to say. Maybe today chef.

Next up was Tracey McMillan Rosato who guessed OPT (Old Post Tavern)
Who's down with OPT? You Down with OPT? Ok, I'm being dumb. Sorry Tracey but not this time.

Alexander Dacey followed with "Brennen's Shebeen?" which was another swing and a miss.

I don't get it... I take the picture with the name partially showing in the picture and I hear about it. Renzo puts it in the picture and no one can see it (except me I guess). It must be a lighting thing.

On we go... Finally a little while later a new player, Rachel Marie jumps in and simply puts up "The angus" and very quietly solves the riddle.

Now there is only one question left, Is Mark safe? I'm not sure everyone saw that he "liked" the post earlier so it was a relief that a little later in the day we heard from our friend Mark (19th hole) Beyerly as he broke it down in his usual fashion by studying the picture for its clues and then devining his answer. In this case he sliced off the tee and sent it into the woods (practice that swing big guy). Hey he is in the game and thats all we ask.

I have a feeling today will help many people get off the snide. I love this place and judging by the lines, I'm not alone.

Rosé of the day - Wednesday June 19, 2013

Di Giovanna Cerbino Nerello Mascalese Rosato 2012 $14.99

Tasting notes: Boasts an intense floral nose which leads to bright notes of cherry, raspberry and red currant on the palate. Light, refreshing and crisp,

Varietals: Nerello Mascalese

Region: Sicily, Italy

Menu: Gerbino Rosato will pair well with light appetizers, risotto, seafood, white meat, and sweet cheese.

Tuesday's answer: Maureen Hart-Lenker was in first with her answer "Hansen's?" and she was the only one that came up with the correct one yesterday. There were other guesses, Chefmichaelatyourservice jumped in with "Palooza" and Sandy Beyerly tried "Dailey's" as she looked out for her hubby Mark (I'm confused) Beyerly, but not this time. The good news is that Mark is safe in the world but the sad news is that his wife was unable to save him this time. Maybe today! I thought that Renzo came up with a unique approach on that one, only one real clue, Flowers. Hansen's may be the best known florist in town so it was likely that both they and Dailey's would be guessed and sure enough...

Let's just watch and see how today's goes before I tried to guess how well people will do with it. If a clue is needed we'll try it later.

Tuesday, June 18, 2013

Rosé of the day - Tuesday June 18, 2013

La Ferme Saint Pierre Rosé Ventoux 2012 $14.99

Tasting notes: Offers delicious, serious dry Rosé with beautiful copper/salmon coloring, tangerine and citrus blossom, tropical fruits, a whiff of white peach and lovely, pure mineral notes with excellent acidity - wow!

Varietals: 80% Grenache, 20% Cinsault

Region: Ventoux, Rhone, France

Monday's answer: Switzer's Pharmacy in Southport was the official answer to Monday's picture. We had another clue filled answer from Mark (The running man) Beyerly that seemd to have all of the monikers of the correct guess. Another guess was from Alexander Dacey who said Harborview Market. You may have seen that they are officially in Bridgepot which will preclude them from being part of the promotion but I may take some time to run by and see what they are all about. looks like a great little place!
It seems like the ladies have gone a bit quiet so I am going to try to entice them back with some flowers today. This beautiful arrangement fits with the bottle quite nicely! We'll see if it works

Monday, June 17, 2013

Rosé of the day - Monday June 10, 2013

Domaine Eugene Carrel Vin De Savoie Rose 2012 $10.99

Tasting notes: The indigenous varietals and surprisingly warm weather produces a rose with a delicate mousse that carries aromas of ripe, aromatic red berry and blood orange. The refreshing and persistent finish is quintessential Jongieux.

Varietals: 80% Gamay/10% Pinot Noir/10% Mondeuse

Region: Vin De Savoie sub-region, Savoy Region, France
Menu:pairs well with a wide range of lighter fare including grilled vegetable panini, charcuterie, summer salads and more!

Friday's answer: Joe Worthington was first to chime in on Friday with Blackhorse Garage which, if you know the place and what it looks like, is a fair enough guess. Blackhorse is in Bridgeport though and this is about Fairfield so we won't be headed there for this.
Hugh Anderson was next with "Classic Car Gallery ( The name is in the picture)". So, as I explained, Renzo (or Enzo), was away last week and I took this picture. I am apparently not as adept at this as he is and showed it on my very first attempt. Oh well, this week we got him back.
Next to put something up was Chefmichaelatyourservice and he was over at Heritage Square but he was off track this time. Becoming a player aren't you Chefmichaelatyourservice? Stay with it, I see potential.

Finally Mark (Spell check) Beyerly came by to agree with Hugh and let me know that in fact I had blown it. My only saving grace is that he blew it too and I write these things so I get to remind him twice in this update that he isn't as perfect as we thought (make that 3 times).

Today is a great one by Renzo! I think that it is a very difficult one to get things going this week but he has a couple of great visual clues in the picture and one apparent clue that really threw me off this time. When I went to get this one set up I had lots of ideas about how he should do this one and what angle he should use. When he got back I was not in love with what he came up with until I really started analyzing it and realized how brilliant it was. All I can say is good luck on a Monday morning! This one should have people thinking for some time today.
At least that is what I think. We'll see how you do.

Varietals: Genache, Cinsault and Mourvèdre
Region: Cassis, France

Thursday's answer: Chefmichaelatyourservice show some "stick to it-iveness" (is that a word?) yesterday and was rewarded with the right answer! His head was first at J & R Automotive which was close but it took until he was driving home to get it straight. The correct answer was Fairfield Auto Sales and repair and Mark (ol' reliable) Beyerly helped to point us in the right direction early and helped to motivate the right answer. Thanks to both for helping out.
Ok, today wraps up our "Dedicated to Dad week" and for this one I had to do the work. Renzo has been away on vacation and took a bunch of pictures before he left but there was one we wanted to wrap this whole thing up with and the place was closed when we were trying to get it so I went and took the picture. You will understand by looking at this picture why we have Renzo do it but hey, I did my best.
Ok, lets finished the week strong. Who has the answer?

Father's Day Ad June 2013

Lots of his favorites along with rare and unique gifts
for dear ol' dad.
Come in and let us help you find the perfect gift!

Rosé of the day - Thursday June 13, 2013

Domaine de Gournier Rosé 2012 $9.99

Tasting notes: The fruit is harvested expressly to craft rose, and is vinified in stainless steel tanks to optimize the primary flavors of the grapes. Brightly colored, the explosive red berry fruits in the nose and on the palate are accented by notes of spice & a touch of earth. Fresh and lively, this beautiful dry Provencal-style Rose is a great addition to the already well recognized Domaine de Gournier line up.

Varietals: Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Grenache Noir, Mouvedre

Region: Costieres de Nimes, Rhone, France

Wednesday's answer:  I think we may have knocked some of you off of your game by posting yesterday's picture of The Barber of Serville when we did. Monday had a couple of guesses that were pointing that way and as I posted this one yesterday I was thinking that it might get confusing and for once I may have been right. Anyway, A bunch of people "like" the photo and I agree. Renzo really did a good job with that one. I love the kids Barber chair and even though I have never sat in it, there is a real feel of americana when I look at it. Fairfield is a great, diverse town with lots to see and we'll look at a lot more of it in the coming weeks. One comment yesterday came from Mark (I have no knowledge of barbers) Beyerly but as he said Monday, he and barbers aren't very familiar. Lets see if today is different for him and the rest of you. Please help us to get this out there by "sharing" and "liking" the posts on Facebook.

On a side note: I was contacted by someone that would like to do an article on this whole promotion which sounds like fun. We're not sure of all the details but we'll let you know more as things develope.

Rosé of the day - Wednesday June 12, 2013

Clue: Figaro, Figaro, Figaro.... It's --- ----- -- --------

Domaines Ott Les Domaniers 2012 $19.99

Tasting notes: This Rose has a salmon-pink color and a citrusy nose, with a dominant aroma of strawberries. A full-bodied, fresh taste opens out onto hints of fresh fruit. Well-balanced, round and crisp.

Varietals: Grenache, Cinsault, and Syrah

Region: Côtes de Provence, France

Menu: Domaniers Rose will be a delicious companion to delicatessen meats, poultry, white meats, fish, Provencal and Asian dishes.

Monday's answer: Yesterday proved to be easy for some and more difficult for others. It just goes to show that I have no idea what I am talking about when it comes to this game. In my mind yesterday was going to take some time and effort, there wouldn't be a quick answer on this one, and of course I was wrong. Mark (The Riddler) Beyerly jumped in with a clue filled answer which was followed by Alexander Dacey within a few seconds. If only Alexander could have hit that "post" button a little quicker I would have been able to chuckle at my nemesis for the day knowing that while he was crafting his answer someone else simply put it up. Curses!
In the end the correct answer was posted in a couple of fashions and it was of course  Urban's Benson and Post Auto inc. We also had Tom Bauder chime in for the first time with "citco gas across the street from you", a good guess but I'm sorry to say, not the right one this time. Try with us again Tom, I suspect you will have better luck.
Today's is a fun one and although I never sat in this seat as a kid, I would be willing to bet there were many local men that did as a child and will remember it fondly. Lets see how it goes...

Rosé of the day - Tuesday June 11, 2013

Chateau De Flaugergues Rose 2012 $11.99

Tasting notes: Very fruity, a rosé full of freshness, re-presenting the aromas of the South of France, pleasant in any circumstances.

Varietals: Cinsault, Grenache

Region: Coteaux du Languedoc, France

Monday's answer: A drum roll please...
Not only were we able to stump Mark (I don't pay for haircuts) Beyerly, we caught everyone on this one. Two very legitimate (from my perspective) answers were put up. They were the same answer and Joe Worthington was first followed by Peggy O'leary who both guessed "The Barber of Serville" which seems logical enough. They have been around forever, they are in our main area of town where we have been quite a bit but... This time we got you! The picture actually comes from Southport Center Barbers. I thought the cash register would jump out for someone but not this time.
When I first reached out to these guys they simply hung up the phone after a short "no thanks" so I got in the car and went down to see them. Turns out they are a great group and we ended up spending some time sitting and chatting. I'm glad they reconsidered and joined in with us.
Today has a similar question mark. I think this could be a stumper too... lets see how it goes

Rosé of the day - Monday June 10, 2013

Domaine de L'Abbaye Rosé 2012 $16.99

Tasting notes: Pale, dry, rich in flowery bouquet and elegant
Varietals: Cinsault, Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre

Region: Côtes de Provence - Cru Classé, France

Menu: is equally at home when served with traditional Provencal and Mediterranean specialties, Asian dishes or contemporary fusion food. In fact, it is an ideal partner for the way people want to eat these days, and is a source of genuine easygoing pleasure.

Friday's answer: Friday we had a pair of correct answers put up. First Mark (Emeril Lagasse) Beyerly "Bam"... chimed in with his typically precise answer or in this case not so precise. St Thomas after all in not just on the Post road but on the corner of Post & Ruane, not that I want to be picky. Followed by Chefmichaelatyourservice who also came up with the right answer and of course that was St. Thomas Aquinas Church. If you missed our Saturday post, you missed that Mark was in over the weekend with his family and revealed that he has weaknesses that we will now exploit! Your are in trouble Mr. Beyerly, just you wait...
This week is dedicated to Dad so put your thinking caps on as we jump around a bit and try to find things that are a bit more related to our fathers and this coming weekend.
