The Dog Days of Summer are here - Puppy Socialization Begins

The line for the slide at the puppy pool
The Puppy days of summer are almost here. The happiness starts next week as the long awaited puppy socialization begins. Everyone we talk to seems to be looking forward to holding, loving and doting on these wonderful little puppies from Lily's 2nd litter. They are very lucky to be so popular because all of that love will give them a great start as they prepare to go to their new homes.

The puppies have been through the first stage of "Super Dog" training and their "Rules of 7's" exercises are nearly complete. Their development has been fun to watch and even more fun to be part of.

Now it's time to expose them to people!

We need you and your kids, grandparents, and friends from all age groups and walks of life to help us to socialize them with people. It was a great success with Lily's first litter and this exposure plays an intrical role in their development.

Each dog from her first litter went to their new home with this advantage and each has turned out to be an great, well loved dog. We look forward to seeing that success repeated and we need your help.

Beginning Wednesday July 22nd at 1:00pm, We will be bringing the puppies to the store for a couple of hours, a few times a week for this developmental therapy. We invite willing participants to come and visit with the puppies, to hold, love, and expose them to different people from all age groups. Watch our Facebook page or stop by the store to see their schedule of times. This will not be an exact science, the days and time will vary a bit to fit our own work schedule and to be sure that they aren't stressed from over stimulation.

There is more...

We also want to use this as an opportunity to help the Fairfield Animal Shelter.

I stopped by the other day to ask what we could ask people to donate and what I found out was that there is a lot that we can do. I was given a list of supplies that will help them care for abandoned and lost animals. We intend to do our part to help and we know that we are fortunate to have a fairly affluent clientele with more means than many communities. Anything that you can contribute to the cause will be appreciated by us but more importantly by the men and women that work at the shelter along with all of the animals that have ended up in the shelter for a variety of reasons.
Gratuitous picture of a sullen looking puppy to help drive donations :)

Here is the list:

- Dry Dog or Cat Food
- Canned Dog or Cat Food
- Dog and Cat Treats
- Dog and Cat Toys
- Cat Litter
- Grooming Supplies
- Towels and Blankets
- Animal Beds
- Collars
- Leashes
- Pooper Scoopers
- Crates and/or Cages
- Flea and Tick Spray

It is a great lesson for kids to learn about helping their community and giving to those that are less fortunate.

We will have a donation box set up for the next 3 weeks and we invite everyone to help regardless of whether or not you are visiting the puppies. There is no requirement to make a donation to visit and/or handle a puppy, This is just our way of trying to help out our community. You are not obligated

"Like" us on Facebook and watch our page as we announce our "Puppy socialization" times. Come by to see them and sit and visit with them while these beautiful little puppies learn about people.

"With our girl from Ipanema"

Pitu Cachaca Caipirinha
The Caipirinha is the national cocktail of Brazil. Originally known as the peasant's drink, it found its way into the capital cities of Rio De Janeiro and Sao Paulo, and from there to the most stylish bars and restaurants all over the world.

Chilled Red wine, Will it be your Ah-Hah Moment?

Summer is here and if this past week of humid, hot weather is an indicator, red wine season over for a while.

Or is it?

Light summer whites and of course summer's answer to red, the crisp clean and light Rosé, have taken center stage. Menus have lightened as the farmers markets offer garden fresh options and local fishermen bring home the catch of the day for tonight's meal. Gone are the slow cooked stews and blood thickening gravies of the cooler months as we migrate to the patio to share time with the pesky mosquitos and grilled summer foods.

Swordfish and Striped Bass, Chicken and Slaw, Grilled Pork Chops and Potato Salad are more likely to be on the menu and the wine selections move from Cabernet Sauvignon to Sauvinon Blanc. Seasonal choices are nothing new and each season we adjust our buying habits and offerings to our patrons at Harry's to match the menus being created at home.

Summer doesn't always mean a light meal however, and sometimes the menu has BBQ Ribs or a nice thick NY Strip coming off the grill and I don't know about you but at my house we aren't breaking out a crisp Rosé from Provence to pair with the foods in this genre. Ribs scream for Zinfandel and my Strip steak wants a Cab or Malbec. It is summer time and most nights are white or pink but on steak night the only pink I want to see is in through the center of a well charred outside that is my steak

What to do?

Simple really...Take your red wine to cellar temperature! 20 minutes to a half hour in the refrigerator or just a few minutes in an ice bucket will do the trick. Don't over do it, if you bring the temperature of a big red down too far the wine will lose complexity and then you defeat the purpose of the pairing and you will find a dull wine that doesn't show well with your meal. Bigger Reds like Cabs, Malbecs, and Zins do not do well at refrigerator temperature but they do very well at cellar temperature.

If you have ever served a great California Cabernet on a sultry summer night and it struck you as thick and gloppy with high alcohol, it may have simply been the temperature of the wine. In the summer months the ambient temperature around us rises and so does the temperature of the wine in the bottle that is sitting on the table in 80+ degree weather. Red is more delicate than you think and really wants to be between about 55 and 70 degrees to show well in your glass. Having a bit of condensation on the outside of your red wine glass on that sultry summer evening is actually a good thing.

There is more...

Some red wines do very well at cooler temperatures! Beaujolais, Barbera, and even some Pinot Noir or other lighter bodied, fruitier style wines which will also pair well with summer fare do well at cool and even cold temperatures. When working with customers I often describe them as picnic wines and my suggestion is to take the wine and stick it in the refrigerator, "Pack up the picnic basket" I say, "When you get ready to leave the house pop the bottle into the basket next to the cheese or cold fried chicken and off you go". The wine keeps the food cool and it begins to warm up just a bit as you travel down to the beach or up into the woods. By the time the blanket is set out and the food is served, your wine will be the perfect temperature! Alternately you could pull it out of the refrigerator 15-20 minutes before dinner and let it rest on the counter.

The summer season is a great time for a crisp Sancerre or delicate Rosé but it doesn't mean that you have to hang up your red wine glass. At the store we have a couple dozen great red wine choices that will do quite well in the refrigerator right next to their white and pink counterparts.

-Cheers!

Summer of the Session

It's an art form to brew a high ABV beer that isn't hot and boozy on the palate; a beer balanced by bittering hops that complement the sweet maltiness of the grain. But in the same right, and perhaps even more challenging, I've learned it's just as skillful to brew a session beer on the other end of the beer spectrum, without compromising well-balanced flavor.

What makes a good session beer?

By definition, session beers have less than 5% alcohol by volume (ABV). A good session beer is the ideal beer for summer; it's lawnmower beer, boat beer, deck beer, beach beer, social beer. Its a beer that you can drink easily and even repetitively whether it's lunch and you're going back to the office or you're already stuffed full of barbecue. But just because it's "light and easy," so to speak, doesn't mean that the flavor profile has to be compromised.

It's the imperial beers, the bigger, bolder, American beers that have been exploiting the craft beer world over the last fifteen years. But session brews have been around for centuries. And yes, session beers may be nothing but the latest trend in our smug world of beer geekery, but they're rising up once again to remind us what beer is all about. Enjoying a beer is more than just chasing a buzz, it's drinkable congeniality and companionship. A good beer is about camaraderie, enjoyment, relaxation, and community.  It's about friendship, meeting new people, and good times.

Last summer we saw a surge in breweries producing their own take on a session, but this summer, even more so, is the summer of the session. These are my top five picks ( in no particular order) of session beers you can find in the cooler at Harry's this summer. Just in time for some boat beer on the Fourth. Cheers.

1. Introvert Session IPA,  4.8% ABV

Left Hand Brewing Company, Longmont, CO.
Packed with quintessential American hops - cascade, chinook, sterling, and comet , the nose breathes tropical fruit aromas, but finishes cleaner and more earthy on the palate. It has a medium to fuller body for a low ABV beer.

2. Simmer Down, 4.9% ABV

Sebago Brewing Company, Gorham, ME.
El Dorado, mosaic, and ahtanum hops. Floral and grassy backed up by some pale, bready maltiness. Bright and clean.

3. Effortless IPA, 4.5% ABV

Captain Lawrence Brewing Company, Elmsford, NY.
Dry-hopped with mosaic and palisade hops, the nose on this is aggressive and bold. A little bit of pine and grapefruit to follow but subtle and pleasant. The key to this one is the dry hopping process which emphasizes the aromatics.

4. Evil Twin Mission Gose, 4% ABV

Brewed at Westbrook Brewing Company, Mt Pleasant, SC.
Traditionally brewed with salt and coriander, Gose style beers are rooted in German tradition and their bright acidity was made for the summer. This beer is tart and refreshing with slightly herbal notes from the eucalyptus that it's brewed with. My only complaint is that it doesn't come in a six pack of cans.

5. Sierra Nevada Nooner Pilsner, 5% ABV

Sierra Nevada Brewing Company, Chico, CA.
A classic German pilsner. Brewed with spicy and floral German hops, the Nooner is a crisp and dry lager, but true to Sierra Nevada character, it's also hop forward.
